Everlasting Precepts

January 16, 2007

Isaiah 55:11  “So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth:  it shall not return unto me void, but shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.”

II Timothy 4:2-3  “Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.  For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears.”

This is a very basic post in it’s content, however, we live in a day when, as the above verse states, folks aren’t enduring sound doctrine.  Not only are they not grounding themselves in truth, many are questioning its infalliability via a host of reasonings.  Modern versions are deemed “more accurate” by some and others simply fail to see how a single text can house everlasting truths without error, despite the number of authors who have contributed to it and the length of time that it took to be compiled in its present form.  The concept that God is able to preserve his word unto every generation isn’t considered possible by many.

I’ve always admired those who can dig into a particular issue, such as evolution, , dig up volumes of research material, and place it into a easy flowing format that seeks to prove through physical venues the scriptural account of things.  I’m not one of those folks.  I can write down concepts in broad strokes, but to get into the minute details requires a level of patience and a span of time that I don’t have.  Such quests play an important role as we contend for the faith and I respect anyone with such ability.  While such research is profitable and very enlightening to one who seeks truth, throughout scripture, the ongoing pattern has been for God to speak to us through his word.  He gives us teachers,  pastors, and evangelists.  He speaks to our hearts as we spend time with him, but he will always work in accordance with his written word.

A primary example of this would be the parable of the rich man.  (I recall using this recently.  Sorry to be redundant but this is a necessary point)  In Luke 16:19-31 Jesus gives us the account of the rich man and Lazarus.  (This wasn’t a parable; the presence of a persons name makes this an actual event)  As you know, the rich man lived only for this life; not regarding God and when he died, found himself in hell.  To paraphrase, he goes on to ask that one be sent to warn his 5 brothers about this terrible place.  To the request, Abraham tells him that they have Moses and the prophets and that if they refuse to listen to this written word, they wouldn’t be persuaded, even if one returned from the dead.

II Timothy 3:15-17  “And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Jesus Christ.  All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.  That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.”

God places ultimate authority in his word; in fact we are going to be judged according to the things written in his word.  It’s an incredibly serious form of rebellion for one to alter in any form Gods word.  Gods word has been under attack ever since the rebellion in heaven when Lucifer lured a third of the angels into abandoning their first estate and believing his lie.

I don’t know why this just came into my mind, but I’ll pass it on.  Lucifers entire series of problems started when he began to harbor pride in his heart.  (the “it’s all about me” attitude had its roots right here in the original rebellion against God.)  He determined to set up a throne above the God who inhabits eternity and created all that is.   Pride, greed, coupled with a desire to receive worship that belongs to God who is from everlasting and to everlasting.  He was cast down, along with all who followed him and ever since that moment, he has been attacking Gods word, Gods image, and Gods people.   He has fathered every form of lie imaginable as to obscure the gospel of Jesus Christ.  Think about this; these fallen angels were in paradise and were partakers of the chorus when the morning stars sang together.  Lucifer told them a lie that sounded so good as to cause them to abandon this place and rebel against God.  This lie had to really be a whopper.

Being off work because of Martin Luther Kings birthday, I had a rare opportunity to tune in to Steve Quayle on shortwave radio.  (His web site is in the blogroll and is a really good source for relevant news and reports that you won’t hear on CNN)  He stated that he primarily focuses his show toward those with ears to hear.  He puts the word out there, but doesn’t go into articulate detail as to why this is this and that is that.  This is a good approach in the few remaining moments of the age.  To proclaim truth and let God give the increase.  Because we can contend all day long and unless the Holy Ghost moves in that persons heart, they’re not going to receive it.  Well educated folks will contend for the theory of evolution to the point of sounding totally absurd rather that humbling themselves and admitting  that “this theory really doesn’t work.”  The presence of a spiritual realm throws every law of physics out the window.

Psalm 14:1  “The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God.  They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.”

Jeremiah 23:28-29  “The prophet that hath a dream, let him tell a dream; and he that hath my word, let him speak my word faithfully.  What is the chaff to the wheat?  saith the LORD.  Is not my word like as a fire? saith the LORD; and like a hammer that breaketh the rock in pieces.”

It’s totally impossible to be presented with the word of God and remain as you were beforehand.  When you hear about Jesus Christ coming into the world to save sinners, you can either accept it or reject it.  Either way, your heart will be affected.  This truth; Gods word is what we ought to be proclaiming as it is his truth that will make men free. Psychiatrists will address symptoms; using physical means to address spiritual problems, but they can never offer a person freedom.  Money can buy a plethura of trappings, but it can never make a person free.  (on the contrary, it tends to pierce one through with many sorrows.)

John 8:31-32  “Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him,  If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;  And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”

Today, I’m free because there was a time in my life where I believed the gospel.  I understood that Jesus had paid for my sins at Calvary, I repented of my sins (was sorry for and turned from) and asked Jesus to save me.  This truth; that Jesus Christ came into the world to save sinners, delivered me from darkness and brought me into a relationship with God who is from everlasting and knows the number of hairs on each persons head.  This truth; so simple and yet so powerful still makes people free.  Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

As I begin to close this out, it’s my prayer that we all would give increased diligence to hide the word of God in our hearts.  It’s so easy these days to get sidetracked by every little insignificant happening on earth.  We get so busy that, if were not careful, we’ll unknowingly leave our first love.   (It’s a disquieting fact that this had happened to the Ephesians completely uinawares.  In this day when pseudo-gospels and shadowy conjunctions are profigated through a population that’s more than ready to receive a strong delusion, it’s more imperative than ever for us to contend for the faith once delivered unto the saints.  A thourough grasping of greek and Hebrew isn’t required, nor is a wall full of diplomas (nothing wrong with a wall full of diplomas as every person has their particular calling) but simply the word of God.  I’m going to close this out, but I’ll end with some familiar, but very important verses.

John 17:17  “Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.”

Hebrews 4:12  “For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”

Revelation 19:11-15  “And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness doth he judge and make war.  His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself.  And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood:  and his name is called The Word of God.  And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean.  And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.”

  1. In a little while I will be heading off to jury duty. I mention it because I will do the same thing I did the last time I was in court; read my Bible. There is much waiting around time and I will fill that time with something profitable for me; feeding on the Word of God.

There’s an inner strength that comes with feeding on His Word. having suffered from spiritual anorexia for many years, I would rather miss a meal than not partake of the wisdom from the mouth of God.

The Bible has level after level of truth and wisdom. If you dig deep enough you will find whatever you need to get you through that trial and tribulation. It is a never-ending source of strength that I thank God for every day.

  2. truth is not some abstract idea. truth is a person. He is the truth. He is our truth. He is the way, the life and the truth.

  3. I must confess, I didn’t read it all, but one part caught my eye.
Today, I’m free because of the Gospel…………

    I’m blessed, because your blessed,

  4. OK,
I read it all. Very good. Yes, the Word is under attack and we have not seen anything yet. Now’s the time to hide it in our hearts, someday it may be difficult to find the written word just laying around like it is now.
