Behind Enemy Lines

January 21, 2007

Ths concept of spiritual warfare has been on my heart much lately.  It seems all the more relevant as we are in times of incredible deception and increased hostility to the truth of the gospel.  Many nice, well meaning folks seem to be questioning the existance of the God of their fathers in light of….well….”enlightenment” so called.

This isn’t the topic for this post, but earlier today, I picked up the February copy of Astronomy Magazine.  The primary article is “What if String Theory is wrong?”  Like the big bang theory, this has become ever more accepted and it’s where we get dark matter, dark energy, and a host of other concepts as men piece together greater and greater equations.  If string theory is erroneous, then a collossal house of cards will come tumbling down and the future of dark matter with all of its siblings, will be in jeopardy.

Hebrews 11:3  “Through faith, we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of god, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.”

I really enjoy astronomy because I don’t pull my hair trying to figure out something that’s unfigureoutable.  While learned men spend a lifetime debating such issues, I look into the night sky and praise God who created all that is.   I can really appreciate the “Hubble Deep Field” image, for I know that God is from everlasting and to everlasting.  Well on to the topic at hand.

SPIRITUAL WARFARE.  This is the unrelanting struggle in which every saint of God is a player; even if they don’t want to be.  The concept of “getting into the enemies camp” has been on my mind since posting “The Fog of Battle” which is about the same topic.

The world is filled today with every form of diversion imaginable.  Things which, in and of themselves might be harmless, but they become overly important in our lives and draw us away from God.  Little things that get in the way of prayer time or of studying the word of God.  Foolishness that keeps ones mind focused on the things which will soon pass away.  The presence of the “different law” working in our members gives Satan a platform from which to work havoc in our lives if we’re not alert to what’s taking place.

Another tactic; one that has millions trapped in its grasp, is the traditions of men.  Getting folks consumed with following after that which has no scriptural backing.  It’s just “always been done that way.”  (check Mark chapter 7)  The lines between scripture and tradition can be difficult to distinguish at times.  It’s another reason as to why we need to, through use, have our senses excercised to discern both good and evil.  Or in this case, tradition and scripture.

While traditions are cumbersome and restrictive, the damage that they do is minor in comparison to that which is done by the false teacher.  These would be the grievous wolves that the apostle Paul warned about in Acts 20:29.  Smooth talkers, preaching another gospel will draw men away after themselves.  They slip in beneath the radar screen speaking all of the correct phrases as to obscure their true nature.

II Timothy 4:3-4  “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears.  And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.”

II Peter 2:1-3  “But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction.  And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of.  And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not.”

They will always appeal to the lust of the flesh; these false teachers, as they seek to draw away men after themselves and their ministry.  I know that the concepts in this post are not only a repeat of “The Fog of Battle” they’re also very basic.  Nonetheless, they cannot be overemphasised in this age when everything is soon to be shaken to its foundation.

COUNTER OFFENSIVE.  Just as the enemy seeks to get into our backyard, we likewise can get into the very heart of demonic strongholds.  One way, of course, is through the proclaiming of truth.  I have always had great respect for those of a scientific or historical background who can reason from that perspective as to why the scriptures must be accurate.  They can list statistics and delve into historical records to verify that which they believe using the very methods of those who regard the gospel as foolishness.  While this is profitable and indeed very informative, the lacking of such a background of knowledge should by no means stop us. Jesus told us primarily to go and preach the gospel.  Not to necessarily get mired down in endless debatings, but to just speak his words.   Everyone has their proper gift of God.

Matthew 10:19-20  “But when they deliver you up, take no thought how or what ye shall speak: for it shall be given you in that same hour what ye shall speak.  For it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father which speaketh in you.”

Luke 21:15  “For I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which all your adversaries shall not be able to gainsay nor resist.”

I Thessalonians 1:5  “For our gospel came not unto you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Ghost, and in much assurance; as ye know what manner of men we were among you for your sake.”

The word of God can not return void.  One cannot hear Gods truth and be unaffected by it.  They can accept it or they can harden their hearts against it.  But once the gospel of Jesus Christ is presented, the former “status quo” has been forever altered in that venue.  I’ve scanned many posts as of late from other circles and the authority of the word of God is under intense opposition by those who resist the truth.  We know that the word of God is sharper than any two edged sword and every person upon the face of the earth will be judged according to the word of God.   If a person refuses to hear the word of God, we know that they wouldn’t be persuaded even if a person were to return from hell; smoke rolling off from them and smelling of sulfer in order to warn them of that place of torment.  This may sound ridiculous but that’s precisely what Abraham told the rich man in Luke chapter 16.  The hardness of a persons heart and their refusal to accept Jesus Christ as their Savior is mind-boggling; even though we’ve all had our conversation in times past in the world and can remember how blinded we were.

PRAY WITHOUT CEASING.  This is our direct link to the throne room and the means by which we can bring satanic strongholds crashing down in short order.  When you go before the Lord in a spirit of meekness with absolute adoration for the Ancient of Days, and lay out your petition, things take place in the hidden realm of the spiritual.  Mountains crash into the sea, barriers disappear, devils flee, and souls are delivered.  Jesus Christ is glorified.

II Corinthians 10:4  “(For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds.)”

The devils are terrified of a saint who spends hours with the Lord in prayer.  This is why it seems at times to be so difficult to find prayer time; because it’s your direct two-way communication with the Lord Jesus and its under constant bombardment.  I just remembered something that I had totally forgotten about.  Remember the first war with Iraq?  I just remembered a phrase spoken by Colin Powell that became a “sound byte” during that time.  It was:

“First were going to cut it off; and then were going to kill it.”

Satan desires to “have you.”  He walketh about seeking whom he may devour and if he can “coax” you out away from the Lord; get you to begin neglecting time in prayer and time in the word of God, he has effectively neutralized you.  The word “coax” is intentional because Jesus has promised to never leave us nor forsake us.  We’re the ones who go wandering if we don’t give diligence to these things.

The power of prayer.  The ministry of intercession for those outside the household of faith.  The privelage to come before the throne of God and make our petitions.  It’s an asymetrical battlefield.  You can be in traffic at a red light and be praying against strongholds.  You can be at work, in a marketplace, on a lonely country road, in a back alley in the seedy part of town, in the mountains, or in the innermost part of a prison.  It doesn’t matter where you are.  The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much; regardless of the physical setting.  I fail at it more often than not, but my goal is to maintain a 24 hour prayer life.  Jesus is always with us and he’s always attentive to our petitions.  The following verse gives us a look at the prayer life of Paul.

Philippians 1:3  “I thank my God upon every remembrance of you.”

Every time that Paul thought about the saints in Philippi, he thanked God.  This is something that I’m striving to really grasp the significnce of.  To pray for someone “upon every remembrance of them.”  In a previous post, I mentioned a group of folks who I’m in prayer over, who are deep into the occult.  One I consider to be a good friend and I long to see her delivered from something that she views in a positive manner but is, in reality, one of the lanes on the road to perdition.  In fact in the old testament they wouldn’t have suffered her to live.

When you begin to pray against strongholds, you also begin to see those who are in darkness differently.  A level of compassion for them develops that may not have been there before.  You begin to see the bigger picture; the eternal soul in need of a Savior.  If you find someone in your life whose difficult to love, start to pray for them.  You’ll begin to see them not as a contrary person who just rubs you the wrong way, but as Jesus sees them.  Created in the image of God and precious indeed.

I need to close and it seems as though I’ve been all over the map tonight.  In closing this longest post ever, I want to encourage any to be ever so diligent in these final hours.  The battle is intense and the level of intensity will only increase as scripture is fulfilled before our eyes.  We should not be fearful, but rejoice as the return of our Lord Jesus Christ is at hand.

  2. Greetings. Thanks for posting again at my site. I was looking for an appropriate spot to reply, and return your visit by stopping here. Since your article about Spiritual Warfare begins with observations about physics and astronomy, this seemed to fit here.

You write, “I do share a point that you make in that a persons outlook on things can be affected by that which they associate with; such as a sociologist viewing the world through the eyes of a sociologist. Everyone has this to a degree. If I had grown up in Belarus, certain things would be different that would affect my thinking.”

This is the human mind, of course, limited and unable to grasp what as a Christian you call God’s Word. As you write, “Nonetheless, the word of God is absolute. Jesus told us to proclaim it and that he would do the rest. As a teenager, there’s nothing that one could have said to me that would have convinced me of my sinful nature. It took the power of the Holy Ghost to do that. God’s word transcends geography, tradition, culture, and ideologies. It is eternal and unchanging; just as God is from everlasting to everlasting. Such a concept is far beyond our limited ability to comprehend, and yet it’s true.”

Yet even if our minds can’t comprehend this Word, soul knows it, because it comes from the same realm, and its spiritual destiny, if it lives according to that Word, is to return to that realm, right?

You write, “Folks go to elaborate lengths as they attempt to prop up the secular view of the world. They have to because if there is a spiritual realm, every law of physics goes out the window.” But even if physics doesn’t apply to the spiritual world, it still works in this physical world, which is also one that God has made. The laws of physics are laws God put in place. The heavens declare the handiwork of God, so a physicist could see the Divine in the physical world, too. The principle is similar to the one behind rendering unto Caesar that which is Caesar’s. Science has its place; it simply is out of its league to address the things of Spirit. Its rules simply don’t apply.

Thanks for your best wishes. — Druidyear
