Conversations With Sally

July 4, 2009
“My sister is a priceless soul who is in need of a deliverance.”
Other than this immediate household, my family isn’t as close as we have been in previous years. Not because of any falling out or rift; it’s merely the by-product of everyone having a hectic lifestyle in a diversity of venues. For this reason, whenever someone in the family calls unexpectedly, the imagination instantly launches into a wondering of “what has happened and who did it happen to?” On the morning of July 3, we received an unexpected call from my sister in South Bend. Although she has suffered from an assortment of infirmaties in recent years, she sounded well on the phone. Shortly into the dialogue, however, the conversation took an unexpected turn when she stated:
“Mom wants me to tell you that she says hi.”
The problem with this message is that our Mom passed away in October of 2000. My sister has been involved with some dangerous activities for a lot of years; although she does not regard them as being dangerous.  She became a mormon in either her late teens or early twenties; thereby eroding any confidence that she may have had in the divine inspiration of scripture while embracing a doctrine which in no wise resembles “that which is written.” Shortly after I came to Jesus in 1983, she made an attempt to steer me into that way, but the Lord prevented this. I had a “very uneasy feeling” about what I being introduced to; even though I considered the mormons to be “just another denomination” at the time. In recent years, my sister has embraced many aspects of new age teaching and professes to routinely talk with deceased persons. This latest incident, however, came about when she attended a session with famed necromancer John Edwards.
I was caught off guard by the statement, but replied that scripture warns against communicating with, or attempting to contact, those who have passed into eternity. She dropped the subject and moved on to more casual topics, but I could tell that my refusal to entertain the idea was bothering her. Once a person detaches themselves from the foundational truths laid out in scripture, they unwittingly set themselves up for embracing a worldview based on falsehoods. A set of beliefs that will often appear warm and fuzzy, but be the ways of death.  To the average person, it would seem a good thing to once again visit with a deceased loved one, or perhaps receive a message from those on the other side. (Luke 16:19-31 just came to mind) All of this despite the warnings that are clearly defined in scripture.
II Corinthians 11:13-15 “For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ.
And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.
Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.”
Following this conversation, I rehearsed the matter to Mrs. timbob. This created additional complication as Mrs. timbob sees nothing wrong with this practice. She admitted that she holds the workings of John Edwards in high esteem; making me, once again, the guy who rains on everyones parade. Sadly both of us have relatives who embrace such practices. Amongst my kinfolk, (kinfolk?) Sally is by far the most visible. On my wifes side it was her Mom and late Grandma who, through the routine employment of a ouija board, opened some doors that should have been left unopened. We can be assured that, when a person calls into the darkness and says “come on over” there will be takers. We can be equally assured that those invited guests will conceil their identity as they lure the “curious simple ones” into a web of bondage and confusion.
There really is nothing new under the sun and a well known reference to the practice of necromancy is found in I Samuel.  King Saul knew that the Lord was no longer with him and consequently, he paid a visit to the witch of Endor. She asked of King Saul “Whom shall I bring up unto thee?” as though it was as common as baking a pie. (I Samuel 28:11) Without a doubt, this practice does yield results. We know that during this encounter, Samuel disclosed the demise of Saul and his sons, along with the deliverance of the children of Israel into the hands of the Philistines. But this doesn’t justify the practice of engaging in necromancy; any more than giving to the poor would justify the act of stealing. A person can proclaim that a conversation with a deceased loved one would be a positive experience that could lead to “closure.”  But the devil attaches a price tag to everything and the spiritual state of my oldest sister is a primary example of that price tag.
Speaking of king Saul; I’ve been perplexed, for a long time, that the prophet Samuel appeared in a situation where an unscriptural practice was being employed. Certainly the Lord is in control and permitted this to transpire. One thing, however, is very clear, and that is the spiritual condition of Saul. This was a man, appointed by God, to be be the king that Israel sought after. He later dissolved any prospects for those of his lineage to reign when he “forced himself” (I love the king James wording) to offer the burnt offerings instead of waiting for the prophet. (he was more fearful of the Philistines than of God) Later on, the bleating of sheep and a lone surviving Amalekite (King Agag) bare witness of a man who was no longer little in his own eyes. In the end, this man, who at one time was “also among the prophets” received his final morsels from a lady of Endor who communicated with the dead as routinely as we do laundry.
King Saul did not have to end up like this. At any time during his downward spiral, he could have called out to the Lord in genuine repentance. Even with the understanding that his rebellion would have consequences in the physical realm, (the disobediance of performing the burnt offerings cost his descendants the throne; this was irreversable) he could have turned his heart to the Holy One of Israel. Instead, he spends his final moments seeking dialogue with Samuel by means of a lady with a familiar spirit in a desperate attempt to hold on to his temporal position in the land of the living. Loving this world will cause a person to make “really bad descisions” every time.
Hebrews 3:12 “Take heed brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God.”
Well I should wrap this up shortly. The conversation with Sally was not the only thing that transpired Friday morning. About two hours beforehand, Dustin arrived from Kentucky to pick up Morgan. She left on good terms; despite the volatility that has defined our relationship over the past few years. I think this is going to end well. I’m praying much for both of them as these are two priceless souls who need Jesus. In fact (this is going to sound nutty) it’s much easier to keep them in prayer from a distance. When residing here, Morgans attitude and shady workings sometimes engage the emotions and make it a real struggle to focus on the eternal. The spirit is always striving but the flesh wants to “react in a manner that’s not condusive to gathering.” But with two states in between us, I can come before the Lord and pray fervently for both Morgan and Dustin; void of any distracting issues in the realm of atoms that cause hindering.
Dustin and Morgan are now in the town of Corbin where employment has been secured. It sits along I 75 about halfway between Lexington KY and Knoxville TN. Please keep Dustin, Morgan, Sally, and this household in prayer. The spiritual battlings are not subsiding; they are growing more intense as the days draw to a close. The situation in this venue is more complex than words can relate, but God sees the end from the beginning.
Blessings always in Jesus name.
Deuteronomy 18:10-12 “There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch,
Or a charmer, or a consuilter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer.
For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD: and because of these abominations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee.”
Acts 19:19 “Many of them also which used curious arts brought their books together, and burned them before all men: and they counted the price of them, and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver.”

  1. “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood , but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.”Ephesians 6:12

  2. Proverbs 2:11-15 “11 discretion will watch over you,
    understanding will guard you,
12delivering you from the way of evil,
    from men of perverted speech,
13who forsake the paths of uprightness
to walk in the ways of darkness,
14 who rejoice in doing evil
and delight in the perverseness of evil,
    15men whose paths are crooked,
and who are devious in their ways.”

I like to remember this passage when dealing with just plain evil as it reminds me of discretion. I looked it up again, it means “the ability to govern and discipline oneself by the use of reason.” It reminds me that it is about me, and my choice on how to deal with it, and a great reminder that I am not the one who can change another, only He.

Prudence, this ability to discipline ourselves is truly a gift from God and I see that in you as I read your writing, it is the gift of wisdom. It is my prayer for you as He walks you through this process, and strengthens you to stand in the gap for the lost.

Thank you for being a willing vessel, there just isn’t enough. I will be praying for you.

  3. Hi Timbob – will be praying for your family. I spoke with my manager about his faith. He still comes to church. He said he wasn’t sure if he believed in heaven, but he does believe that Jesus died on the cross for our sins. The great thing is, he’s not rejecting the truth and open to listening. I asked him why he still attends church, and he said it wasn’t because I go, but he couldn’t really put his finger on it. I know why even though he doesn’t – the holy spirit. Please continue to pray for him. 🙂

My youngest brother is coming to visit me in August, and I am going to ask him about his relationship with Jesus. I’m not sure if he is a believer or not.

    Take care. 🙂

  4. Hi Marwill. It’s astonishing at just how complex the battle is as we engage in spiritual warfare. In my case it often seems as thought the single biggest struggle is with myself; striving to set aside the petty disputings in the realm of flesh and focusing on the eternal aspects. ephesians 6:12 is one of those verses that should be consistantly in the forefront. Thanks.

    Blessings always in Jesus name.

  5. Hi Deb. The battles before us are so complex, and yet in a way, this almost seems to make things easier. The battle lines are clearly defined and the need to engage the enemy is never far from rememberance. And yet the call from Sally caught me off guard. Our Mother was a really sweet lady whom we all love and miss dearly. Sallys comment played on this affection. In a moment that was suddenly thrust upon me, it became necessary to look beyond this love for Mom, look beyond the appearance of “closure” that my sister had as a result of the “encounter” and resort to scripture.

Afterwards, I felt terrible and now must compose a detailed letter to Sally about a host of issues. I pray that the end result will be souls coming into the kingdom of the true God and faith in the Jesus of scripture.

The passage of scripture is so true. Discretion and understanding from on high is imperative in all situations. These battles are way beyond our ability to engage in with our understanding.

Thanks so much for the encouragement. Blessings always in Jesus name.

  6. Hi Code. I believe the managers name is about to be written in the book of life. Surely the Lord is drawing him. This is a very encouraging report. I’ll definately continue to keep him in prayer.

I am keeping your brother and parents in prayer as well and I also that the the visit in August will be fruitful. It’s so awesome when a soul comes to Jesus and they are made a new creation. This I have to always remember when praying for Dustin and Morgan. Dustin has been very abusive to Morgan in the past and now they’re 8 hours away. But if (when) he comes to Jesus, the old things will be forever gone.

Thanks so much for you prayers and for stopping in.

    Blessings always in Jesus name.

  7. Hi Timbob,

I recall a time in my life as a young teenager when I dabbled some with ouija boards. I could ask it questions, and it really would spell out answer for me. There is power in it, but it is the power of the devil. The account of Saul seeking guidance from a witch and the way his life ended is very tragic. You’re right about Saul’s life not having to end the way it did, but as you said, it was brought on by his unwillingness to repent. Even when Samuel confronted him, although Saul said the words, “I have sinned”, he never did truly repent and seemed to be more concerned with how he appeared to men rather than how he appeared to God.(see verse 30)

1Sa 15:17 And Samuel said, When thou wast little in thine own sight, wast thou not made the head of the tribes of Israel, and the LORD anointed thee king over Israel?
1Sa 15:18 And the LORD sent thee on a journey, and said, Go and utterly destroy the sinners the Amalekites, and fight against them until they be consumed.
1Sa 15:19 Wherefore then didst thou not obey the voice of the LORD, but didst fly upon the spoil, and didst evil in the sight of the LORD?
1Sa 15:20 And Saul said unto Samuel, Yea, I have obeyed the voice of the LORD, and have gone the way which the LORD sent me, and have brought Agag the king of Amalek, and have utterly destroyed the Amalekites.
1Sa 15:21 But the people took of the spoil, sheep and oxen, the chief of the things which should have been utterly destroyed, to sacrifice unto the LORD thy God in Gilgal.
1Sa 15:22 And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.
1Sa 15:23 For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee from being king.
1Sa 15:24 And Saul said unto Samuel, I have sinned: for I have transgressed the commandment of the LORD, and thy words: because I feared the people, and obeyed their voice.
1Sa 15:25 Now therefore, I pray thee, pardon my sin, and turn again with me, that I may worship the LORD.
1Sa 15:26 And Samuel said unto Saul, I will not return with thee: for thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, and the LORD hath rejected thee from being king over Israel.
1Sa 15:27 And as Samuel turned about to go away, he laid hold upon the skirt of his mantle, and it rent.
1Sa 15:28 And Samuel said unto him, The LORD hath rent the kingdom of Israel from thee this day, and hath given it to a neighbour of thine, that is better than thou.
1Sa 15:29 And also the Strength of Israel will not lie nor repent: for he is not a man, that he should repent.
1Sa 15:30 Then he said, I have sinned: yet honour me now, I pray thee, before the elders of my people, and before Israel, and turn again with me, that I may worship the LORD thy God.
1Sa 15:31 So Samuel turned again after Saul; and Saul worshipped the LORD.

I wonder how Saul’s life might have turned out if he had repented and continued to follow the Lord. Perhaps he would have been called “the man after God’s own heart” instead of David. Although David did sin greatly, we also have record of him repenting of his sin when he was confronted with it.

Anyhow, enough of my speculation. I must go for now, but I will continue to uphold your family(including your sister) in prayer.

    Have a blessed week.

    Carol

  8. I used to think these portals were not real. Having had divine dreams and revealations, that were not sought for, I thought portals were a way for theives to take money and there was no way to engage the other side.

Then I met a group of people from a christian denomination that are doing just that. Teaching each other how. They wanted to include me in the worst way as I’d been engaged by God and they needed authenticity.

here is the problem. I see now that portals are dangerous in the worst way. It IS possible for God to brigde the divide, he has several times in the Bible, not even considering what he did in Christ. But that engagement MUST be iniatiated from His side, on His time. Everything else, we must trust in Him.

John Edwards… and people with his gifts, I think they believe they are helping people. I think they honestly think what they are doing is from God.

But I also think, if the gift is from God, they are being manipulative. Never, ever, try to manipulate God. He won’t have it. This goes for rain makers out there that twist God’s word as well. For those out there standing on unsteady ground, or aren’t sure… it’s best to get off it!!

  9. Hi Carol. Thanks for keeping this household in prayer. It is indeed a complicated venue. One thing that’s notable about this age is the widespread acceptance by many of supernatural power that’s not of God. The airwaves are awash with programming that promotes occultism along with everything else which offers an unscriptural world view. It’s blatant to those with eyes to see, but to the undiscerning, it’s considered “harmless entertainment.”

And so the conditioning goes on until the population is in a place where they will embrace a man of sin who promotes himself and seeks to destroy the mighty and holy people. These are times like none other in history, but Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

Thanks so much for offering up your observation. Blessings always in Jesus name.

  10. Hi cindy. You have made a very important observation. The Lord does indeed break into the normal flow of events in supernatural ways. But as you mention, this is initiated by him and in his timing. I wholeheartedly embrace the gifts of the Spirit, but we must be careful that we’re grounded in the word of God and not just seeking a show. Discernment is always necessary, but in the realm of the supernatural, it takes on a whole new level of urgency.

The conversation with my sister was strange and it played on the emotions. We all miss our Mom. She was one of the sweetest people that I’ve ever known. This made it really hard to speak out against the unscriptural practice that my sister was engaging in; especially when she was so happy about the “contact.” But I opened my mouth and the first thing that came out was “Sally, that practice is not copndoned in scripture. It’s very dangerous.”

Thanks for offering insight on this issue. Blessings always in Jesus name.
